چکیده

We have studied the residual stresses associated with the PIGMA welding of two right circular beryllium rings. Using spatially resolved neutron diffraction techniques (resolution of 4.5 mm) we have determined residual strains in the beryllium base metal using the interplanar spacings of the (1010) , ) 0 2 11 ( and ) 3 1 10 ( crystallographic planes as a function of axial distance from the weld centerline. Hoop strains consistent with localized differential heating of the base metal are observed. Also, significant crystallographic anisotropy is observed in the radial and axial strains which is related to plastic deformation in the base metal.

A Neutron Diffraction and Modeling Study of Uniaxial Deformation in Polycrystalline Beryllium

The deformation of polycrystalline beryllium to strains of 60.8 pct in uniaxial tension and compression was studied by neutron diffraction and modeled using an elasto-plastic self-consistent (EPSC) model. The beryllium response is asymmetric with respect to tension and compression in both the macroscopic behavior, as displayed in the stress/strain curve, and the microscopic lattice response. Th...

Lattice strain evolution during uniaxial tensile loading of stainless steel

Applied and residual lattice strains were determined by neutron diffraction during a tensile test of a weakly textured austenitic stainless steel and were compared to the predictions of a self-consistent polycrystal deformation model. Parallel to the tensile axis the model predictions are generally within the resolution of the diffraction measurements, but perpendicular to the tensile axis disc...

HIGH TEMPERATURE ELASTIC STRAIN EVOLUTION IN Si3N4-BASED CERAMICS

Tension experiments in vacuum were performed on a monolithic Si3N4 sample at 1375°C and a 20Vol% SiCp-Si3N4 composite sample at 1400°C using the new SMARTS diffractometer at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The deep penetration of neutrons facilitated these in-situ studies. In particular, the hkl-dependent strains were measured and the results interpreted by Eshelby-based modeling for the...
